Chapter 4: Connecting Research to Practical Results
Scientific research often begins with a question, an unmet need, or a problem that is not fully understood. The work may involve developing a hypothesis, designing experiments, collecting data, testing alternatives, and interpreting results. These activities are essential to scientific progress, but a business award nomination should clearly explain how the research relates to a defined achievement and its practical effects.
Scientists from all over the world may explore relevant Globee Awards opportunities. However, the Globee Awards are business awards—not academic qualifications or substitutes for peer review. A nomination should connect the scientific work to the requirements of a current category without exaggerating the maturity, application, or impact of the research.
Begin with the Original Problem
A strong description starts by identifying the problem that motivated the research. What limitation, risk, inefficiency, technical challenge, medical need, environmental concern, or societal issue required attention?
The problem should be specific enough for judges to understand. Rather than stating that a scientist “worked on improving healthcare,” explain the particular issue addressed. Scientists should provide enough context to establish importance without making unsupported claims. Statements such as “millions of people were affected” or “the industry had no available solution” should be supported by credible evidence.
Explain the Scientific Approach
The nomination should next summarize how the scientist or team approached the problem. This might include developing a new method, testing a material, analyzing a large dataset, creating an algorithm, conducting laboratory experiments, evaluating alternative processes, or combining knowledge from several disciplines.
The explanation should be accurate but understandable to judges who may not specialize in the nominee’s scientific field. Technical terminology may be necessary, but it should be defined in plain language. The goal is not to reproduce an academic paper. It is to help judges understand what was done, why the approach was appropriate, and what distinguished it from existing methods.
Establish the Scientist’s Individual Role
Scientific achievements frequently involve teams, institutions, funders, research partners, or outside collaborators. A credible nomination should identify the nominee’s actual contribution.
Did the scientist originate the approach, design the experiments, lead the research team, solve a technical obstacle, analyze the findings, supervise validation, develop the practical application, or oversee implementation?
Accurate attribution is especially important when research has several authors or when intellectual property belongs to an employer, university, laboratory, or partner organization. A scientist should not claim sole responsibility for a collective achievement. The nomination can celebrate individual leadership while recognizing the contributions of others.
Describe Actions and Obstacles
Research rarely progresses in a straight line. Scientists may encounter failed experiments, incomplete data, technical limitations, safety requirements, limited resources, regulatory considerations, supply constraints, or resistance to adopting a new method.
Explaining how important obstacles were addressed can demonstrate the substance of an achievement. Perhaps the scientist redesigned a test, improved the reliability of a process, found an alternative material, established a quality-control method, or coordinated specialists from different fields.
The description should focus on actions that contributed directly to the result. It should not turn every routine difficulty into a major breakthrough.
Connect the Work to Practical Applications
Scientific research may produce several types of practical value. Depending on the achievement and applicable category, the result may have:
- Commercial applications, such as supporting a product, service, or scalable process
- Technological applications, such as improving a device, platform, system, or technical capability
- Organizational applications, such as strengthening research productivity, quality, or decision-making
- Medical applications, such as contributing to diagnosis, treatment development, patient safety, or healthcare delivery
- Environmental applications, such as reducing waste, emissions, energy consumption, or ecological risks
- Operational applications, such as increasing accuracy, speed, reliability, efficiency, or production capacity
- Societal applications, such as expanding access, improving public safety, or helping communities address an important challenge
Commercial success is not necessarily required in every Globee Awards category. Some eligible achievements may be evaluated for technological, organizational, environmental, medical, operational, community, or societal importance. The scientist should describe the type of value actually produced rather than implying sales, adoption, or market success when those outcomes have not occurred.
Describe the Correct Stage of Development
Scientific progress occurs in stages, and each stage has a different meaning. A laboratory result shows what occurred under specified experimental conditions. A prototype demonstrates an early working model. A published paper communicates findings but does not automatically establish practical adoption. A patent protects certain intellectual property but does not prove scientific superiority or commercial success.
Likewise, a clinical finding is not necessarily an approved treatment. An implemented solution has been placed into use, but implementation alone does not prove broad effectiveness. A commercially available product has entered the market, but availability does not establish widespread adoption, profitability, or superiority.
Scientists should use precise wording. Preliminary results should be called preliminary. A prototype should not be presented as a finished product. A patent application should not be described as a granted patent. Research should not be called clinically validated, independently verified, implemented, approved, or commercially successful unless reliable evidence supports that claim.
Accurate descriptions do not weaken a nomination. They make it more credible and allow judges to evaluate the achievement at its genuine stage of development.
Focus on Demonstrated Results
A well-supported nomination connects the original problem, scientific approach, nominee’s role, actions, obstacles, and results. It answers a central question: What changed because of this work?
The answer may involve measurable improvements in accuracy, reliability, safety, efficiency, quality, sustainability, access, or another relevant outcome. When results are still developing, the nomination should clearly distinguish demonstrated effects from anticipated future benefits.
Not every research project will fit a business award category. Purely academic research may be unsuitable unless a current category expressly accepts research or the work has an applicable technological, organizational, commercial, environmental, medical, community, or societal dimension.
